Did A Film Made 88 Years Ago Predict This Moment In History…With An Utterly Unexpected Ending?

Frank Capra’s Lost Horizon premiered in 1937, but offered an astounding vision for a new horizon now

The world seems about as far away from Shangri-La, the utopia depicted in the 1937 film classic Lost Horizon, as it could be. And Capra’s timeless tale could be seen as a cautionary message about our impending doom.

But there’s an alternative interpretation: that the High Lama’s hope for an awakened planet and Robert Conway’s “absurd and senseless vision” of perpetually bellicose nations voluntarily surrendering their arms, might be more than conceivable, but attainable. And that our current world turmoil offers the perfect storm, not for ruination, but redemption. (I wrote about this same possibility in a recent Medium piece that was so bizarre, it was believable.)

Here’s what the character Conway says to his brother George in an enlightened moment after they’ve evacuated their white countrymen from a conflict zone:

Robert Conway: Did you say we saved ninety white people?

George Conway: Yes.
