“Drowning and death are likely for Jacksonville residents who live in the path of this deadly storm … haha,” said Gov. DeSantis at a press conference on Tuesday. (Photo/Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office)

“Forecasters are now predicting a ten to twenty foot storm surge which should be enough to wipe out most of Jacksonville,” said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as Hurricane Idalia bore down on his state. “Clearly, this is God’s wrath on a city that is unable to rein in its hecklers. It’s the Lord’s way of saying ‘Oh, yeah? Boo to you, too.’”

The governor’s seething comments followed the issuing of a memorandum from his office stating that he’d ordered the rapidly strengthening storm to make “a direct and catastrophic hit on the coastal city.”

Political observers in Florida believe the governor’s vindictive declarations could be in response to an incident on Sunday when he was loudly booed while delivering remarks at a vigil in Jacksonville for victims of a racially-motivated shooting there.
